Does anybody know of a Wodehouse story involving some character
(Bertie?) giving a teething baby a slivery stick of wood to chew on?

No but it sounds like something Bingo Little might do.

Freddie Widgeon once left Algernon Aubrey Little chewing a piece of
indiarubber in the Rev. Aubrey Upjohn's study.

And that was to persuade Upjohn to give a half day holiday which would
have pleased the sister of his lady love at the time, is it not?
Barring that I said Bertie instead of Widgeon, other details of the
story appear to be correct.

I think this should be happening in the story where Bertie borrows
Bingo's baby and goes to his old head master's office, and
incidentally leaves the baby in that office.

That was not Bertie who did that; it was Freddie Widgeon.
