PGW uses this technique in at least three short stories, of which I
rediscovered two from context. The third eludes me, as I can't even
remember the context.
(1) Portrait of a Disciplinarian; in book, Meet Mr.Mulliner.
(2) Pots O' Money; in book, The Man Upstairs.
(3) ?
(4) Any others?

# I might have rediscovered No.3 - or, maybe not:
"dukes-have-treated-me-as-an-elder-brother-eye", when referring to the
cold, blue, eye of butler Keggs, in story "The Good Angel", in book "The Man
Upstairs".
Keggs seemed a benign angel to Martin, in his struggling romance with
Elsa, until the butler ruined his advice by revealing a matrimonial
sweepstake in the servant's quarters in which Keggs had a vested interest.
Horns and tail sprouted.

# Ah, have rediscovered the third -
"Can'tseeMrPhilbrickwithoutanappointment" - in "The Voice from the Past"
("Mulliner Nights").
