Discussion:
Big 8 Newsgroups

I just received a notice that my ISP will no longer allow me to receive
messages from newsgroups that are not in the "Big 8." I've never heard of
any Big 8, but I assume this group is not one of them. There is no mention
of "alt." in the list they sent me.

I think it will take a brain of Jeeves' calibre to extract me from this
scrape.

A stiffish email to the suits running verizon.net reminding them that
they're not the only ISP in the world might have the desired effect.

The Mixer, who most fortuitously proof-read the above message before
pressing 'send' because the 'u' in 'suits' was originally a letter found
one row below the 'u' and slightly to its left on most keyboards.

Alt is not one of the big 8. Fortunately, the situation not as dire as it
sounds. Verizon's NNTP server may no longer carry the alt.* groups, but
there are lots of other NNTP servers you can use, and switching is as easy
as telling your newsreader where to look. I've heard good things about
news.individual.net, but googling for "usenet server" will show many more.
You're likely to find a tradeoff between

* which newsgroups are supported
* how much bandwidth you receive
* cost

Good luck!

And almost worth that.

For some of us, free is the only option.

But thank you one and all for the suggestions. All may not be lost.
